The huge (507.6 carat) Cullinan Heritage diamond was sold last week for a record price of $35.3 million. That’s about $10 million an ounce!
The Cullinan Heritage was found last year by Petra Diamonds at the Cullinan Mines, home of the original Cullinan. It’s been described as being about the size of a chicken egg.
The rough stone was bought by the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company of Hong Kong. The buyer hasn’t revealed its plans for cutting the stone, however Johan Dippenaar of Petra said “It has the potential to produce one of the world’s most important polished gems”.
