Diamond Carats

Diamonds are usually described in terms of their carat value. Carat is a measure of weight.

One carat (1ct) is 200 milligrams weight.

Newly mined, rough diamonds have a much higher carat weight than the finished gemstone. Much of the stone is lost during cutting.

The world’s largest cut diamond is currently the Golden Jubilee with a weight of over 545 carats. The Cullinan I diamond weighs just over 530 carats.

Carats are one of the Four Cs of diamond grading. The others are cut, colour and clarity.

Don’t confuse diamond carats with gold karats, karats are a measure of purity not weight.
