The confusion is partly of my making. The survey talks about “created diamond alternatives”, a phrase which presumably is intended to cover both lab created diamonds and man-made simulants. That said, I think you’re right that most people don’t really understand the difference between synthetics and simulant stones.

An interesting side note is that Diamond Nexus is not a lab-grown diamond at all, it is a near colorless diamond simulant with none of the chemical or optical properties of natural or lab-created diamond. One could therefore also draw the conclusion from the survey’s findings that the consumer is confused as to the differences between an actual lab-created “synthetic” diamond (Apollo, Chatham, D.NEA, Gemesis, Morion, New Age, Takara, Tairus, etc) and a diamond simulant (Asha, Diamond Nexus, Moissanite, etc).
